Precision Irrigation Methods

This precision irrigation method is suitable for clay soils but will be difficult to implement in sandy ones. The surface method is performed in the following ways:
● The basin technique limits the area with bunds and floods it. The water stays there for a long time. This is typical for growing rice and can be also used for wheat. The method is applied on flat lands with additional levelling if needed.
● The furrow technique involves building furrows – long trenches filled with water. Furrows are located higher than the crop rows, and the water runs down naturally because of gravity or through siphon tubes or gates.
● The border technique supplies water in-between strips of land. Like the previous type, it also utilizes siphons or gates.

Precision Sprinkler Irrigation

Sprinklers are either temporary or permanent irrigation tools that spray water through machinery or manually operated devices. They move forward or rotate, and the pressure and size of the water droplets depend on the guns and nozzles used.

This precision irrigation method is not suitable for all crops because large droplets and high pressure can damage them. It can destroy flowers in blooming plants and prevent pollination. Additionally, insoluble particles can clog the system and render the equipment inoperable. Wind also significantly affects moisture distribution.

Precision Trickle (Drip) Watering System

In precision drip irrigation, moisture is provided to crops through narrow pipes arranged in lines, earning it the alternative names “drip tape” or “drip line watering.” The system delivers water droplets directly to the crops at low
pressure, minimizing water waste and discouraging weed growth in the vicinity. This not only prevents competition from weeds that can starve plants of nutrients but also significantly reduces the amount of water required for irrigation, making it a highly efficient and sustainable solution. However, drip tapes are sensitive to machinery and easily damaged or blocked with insoluble particles. On the contrary, soluble substances allow combining water supply with fertilizing.
